GetRealTerms ("we," "us," "our") publishes free calculators at getrealterms.com (the "Site"). This policy explains what information the Site collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. We've kept it short because our calculators are genuinely simple: your inputs are processed in your browser and aren't stored in any database we operate.
What our calculators don't collect
Every calculator on this Site — currently covering career, housing, auto, and education decisions, among others (see the full, current list on our homepage) — runs entirely in your browser. The salary, rent, tuition, or other figures you type in are used only to calculate a result on your screen, and we don't log, read, or store them in any database we operate. If you use a "Copy shareable link" button, your inputs are encoded directly into that URL rather than saved anywhere on our end. Opening a shared link does send that URL — including the encoded figures — to whichever server hosts the page, the same way any web page request works, but we don't collect or retain those figures ourselves. A link you've shared with someone stays valid on their end until you or they delete it, independent of your own browser history.
What we may collect
Like most websites, our hosting provider and any analytics tools we use may automatically log standard technical information — things like your approximate location (from IP address), browser type, device type, pages visited, and time spent on the Site. We use this only in aggregate, to understand which tools are useful and to keep the Site running reliably. We don't require an account, and we don't ask for your name, email, or other personal details anywhere on the Site itself.
Some calculators let you encode your entered figures (like a home price or salary) into the page URL, so a "Copy shareable link" button works without a server. We configure our analytics tool to record only the page you viewed, not that URL's query string — so the numbers you type in are never sent to our analytics provider, even when they're present in the address bar or a link you choose to share.
Cookies and advertising
This Site displays ads through Google AdSense. Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this Site. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this Site and other sites on the Internet. You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or by using the opt-out tool below if you're a California resident. Alternatively, you can opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting aboutads.info.
You can also block or delete cookies through your browser's settings at any time. Doing so won't affect how our calculators work, since they don't rely on cookies to function.
If you're visiting from the European Economic Area, the UK, or Switzerland, a consent message (served through Google's consent management platform) will ask for your permission before any advertising cookies are set, in line with Google's EU User Consent Policy. You can change your choice at any time by clearing your cookies and reloading the page.
For US visitors, we support the industry-standard Global Privacy Platform (GPP) and the legacy US Privacy String, which let Google apply Restricted Data Processing when you opt out below or when your browser sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal.
Your California privacy rights (CCPA/CPRA)
If you're a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act ("CCPA/CPRA"), gives you certain rights over the technical and advertising-related information described above. You have the right to:
- Know what personal information is collected and how it's used.
- Delete personal information we hold about you, where applicable.
- Opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information, which under California law can include the use of advertising cookies for cross-site ad targeting — the kind Google AdSense uses.
- Non-discrimination — we won't deny you service or charge you differently for exercising these rights (the Site is free either way).
Because our calculators don't use accounts or store personal data on our servers, most of these rights are exercised through the opt-out control below, which tells Google's ad systems not to use your browsing on this Site for personalized ad targeting. This Site also automatically honors the Global Privacy Control signal if your browser or extension sends one — no action needed if you've already enabled it.
Checking your current preference…
Third-party services
To keep the Site fast and free, we load a small number of resources from third-party providers: Google Fonts (for typography), Chart.js and html2canvas (for the charts and downloadable result cards, both served from a public CDN), Google Analytics (for the aggregate usage statistics described above), and Google AdSense/Funding Choices (for advertising and the consent messaging described above). These providers may see standard technical request data — such as your IP address — when your browser loads those files, subject to their own privacy policies. We don't share any calculator inputs with them, and, as noted above, we configure Google Analytics specifically to exclude the query string that could otherwise carry your entered figures.
These providers are US-based (Google, and Cloudflare, which also hosts the Site), so any technical data described above is likely to be processed in the United States, and may pass through Cloudflare's edge servers in other countries as a normal part of how that hosting network routes traffic — we don't control, and can't fully specify in advance, every country involved in that routing.
Children's privacy
This Site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time, for example as we add new tools or advertising features. We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do.
Access, correction, and complaints
As explained above, most calculator inputs never reach our servers, so in the ordinary course of using the Site there's typically no personal information for us to hold. If you believe we do hold personal information about you — for example, in an email you've sent us — you can ask us to access or correct it by contacting us via our Contact page. We'll respond within a reasonable time.
If you believe we've mishandled your personal information or breached the Australian Privacy Principles, please contact us first via the same page so we can look into it and respond directly. If you're not satisfied with our response, Australian residents can lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), which independently investigates privacy complaints.
